Considering Fred Thompson’s name constantly came up in the Republican primary race even before he became a candidate, one would think he could get a decent following and make some noise right away. But what has happened in reality is anything but that. There was the initial night that he announced his candidacy on Leno, while all his competitors took quick shots at him at the debate he skipped. From there I haven’t heard much about him, until a New York Times article came out, showing how exciting a candidate he really is.

The article details a campaign stop for Thompson, where he talked for twenty four minutes and then ended his discussion to a silent crowd, eventually asking “Can I have a round of applause?” to which he got a few hands and some laughter. So this is the exciting Republican savior we’ve been hearing about for a year now? If so, we better just start calling Hillary “Mrs. President” right now and forget the rest.
The article goes on to mention, “Voters who came out to see Mr. Thompson as he traveled through Iowa, even while expressing admiration for his views and intense interest in his candidacy, said they were struck by how little energy or passion he appeared to bring into a room.”
Thompson seems to have little energy and passion for such a critical time in our nation. Conservative values are being thrown away and twisted about, and Thompson is going along with it.
Fred made the initial public announcement on Jay Leno, speaking in his normal monotone about various issues. Thompson babbled on about a wide variety of views that are unpopular to the American public, like staying until “the job is done” in Iraq, and make references to confrontation in Iran. Thompson’s responses to Leno’s questions sounded a lot like George Bush Part II, and that is something that won’t win a 2008 election. Furthermore, he fails to distinguish himself from most of the other Republican’s, and their views of furthering war and spending.
“Well, I had to drag that out of you,” was Thompson’s response to the delayed applause. With his current course, he will have to drag votes out of people as well.

President Thompson By J. Peter Mulhern fro the American Thinker

I attended the Defending the American Dream Summit in DC yesterday and saw Fred speak. While I didnt think Fred was terrible, he certainly wasn’t great. He got a pretty good reception in the hall, but there were a lot of Fred heads there. He is getting slammed pretty good in the blogs for his performance yesterday.
I also saw Giuliani and Romney speak. They were both quite good, Romney killed, he had the audience eating out of his hand. He is easily the best candidate we have for Prez.

It doesn’t really matter who the Republicans run in ‘08; the next election will be payback for the last 8 years.

I was all for Fred before he took so long getting into the race. And like it has been stated, he just doesn’t seem to have the passion that he had when he held office before. Things might change, but for now I’m looking at the “second tier.”
