Tancredo hired illegal aliens to renovate his house (false?)

Edit 12/5/07: A comment left helped to correct the story somewhat. Before reading the following, please take a look at this, which appears to correct the information reported in the rest of the article.

Interesting new AlterNet report today. It looks as if Mr. Tancredo hired illegal aliens to renovate his house back in 2001-2. I think the story is a little harsh, particularly at the end, for accusing Tancredo of the greatest hypocrisy in the Republican primary season. Tancredo is simply guilty of the same act that Mitt Romney was guilty of–and both want illegal immigration to be fixed (or so they say). Regardless, the story sheds some light on Tancredo.

The most interesting piece of news in the story to me was the report that Tancredo faked mental illness to get out of going to the Vietnam war. AlterNet links to the Colorado Confidential, which highlights a Rocky Mountain News article explaining the situation. If Tancredo could not bring himself to go to Vietnam decades ago, what gives him a moral authority to send other people off to war?

I suppose the best excuse is they aren’t forced to, since the army is voluntary. It’s a bit of interesting news to me nontheless.

  1. Neither Tancredo nor Romney “hired” anyone: they contracted with someone who hired others. And, the Tancredo contractor claims he thought they were here legally. My name’s link lists the misleading statements in the article; let’s see if you correct this post.

  2. yeah, fix this Tancredo smear
