Huckabee might have really shot himself in the foot this time. All his dodging of questions, joking about serious issues, and hypocritical stances have all come to a climax with his latest gag. Huckabee had a press conference to state that he was pulling an attack ad against his biggest rival, Mitt Romney. And to prove that the ad was real, he had to show it in front of all the press that were there.
The ad discussed taxes and abortion in regards to Romney, but Huckabee decided to pull the ad, because he no longer wanted to play negative politics, so has since promised not to make ads attacking is Republican rivals.
But the former governor said he had a change of heart shortly before the media assembled. Easels outlining the attacks on Romney were still standing in the room, and Huckabee stood in front of a banner that read “Enough is Enough.”
I agree, enough is enough. I’ve had enough of Huckabee’s nonsense, and Mitt Romney isn’t even my first choice for president. If the people of Iowa and the nation can’t see through this guy, then I’m not sure what else to say. This was clearly a gimmick to accomplish two things at once. First to openly display an attack ad on Romney to the media, and then to supposedly wipe his hands clean of negative politics. Mike claimed that he had a last second change of heart, the original purpose of the press conference was to attack Romney, and anti-Romney signs still were displayed around the room.
Huckabee knows that people don’t like attack politics, so he got what he wanted, but at what price? Will people finally see through all of this crap from him? Or will they buy into it like they bought into the idea that he was a real conservative (also disproven).
The Romney campaign responded by again going after Huckabee’s record as governor, and in one email, the campaign described Huckabee’s ploy to announce he is not running the ad then following that up by showing it to reporters as a “meltdown.”
One article clearly lays out what the purpose of all this was:
Polls regularly show that Iowa voters do not reward candidates who go negative, and perhaps Mr. Huckabee saw some of those polls. “The people of Iowa deserve better,” he said.
Oh, so that is why. He made a big deal over this, and had “last second thoughts” and it turned into big publicity about him not wanting to attack Romney, then glorifying the entire thing by showing the ad and keeping the anti-Romney signs up. Real smooth Mike, and I agree, the people of Iowa deserve better, so I hope they don’t pick you.
