Abe Greenwald and Karl Rove are fairly confident that McCain will not pick Mike Huckabee for his vice-presidential running mate.
John McCain has said many times (including, once, to me) that he’s looking for a strong national security vice president. He’d have an impossible time defending his choice of the man who didn’t know of the existence of the NIE on Iran.
Someone like Rudy Giuliani or Rick Perry would be a likely choice for John McCain. It gives his character some balance and adds to his “9/11″ mantle that he inherited from Rudy.

Unfair rip on someone who is busy campaigning and didn’t get the notice a few hours after it was released. Didn’t he say something to the extent of I didn’t hear about the report for 6 hours yet the President hasn’t heard of the report for over 6 months when the information was available.
Rudy? You got to be kidding me. The GOP base will not have that ticket.
Fred is always there waiting for the VP invite
Dave, not all that unfair; Huckabee made several other statements that indicate he’s out of touch on the foreign policy front.
Neither choice is what he needs. He needs someone younger, with strong economic credentials, preferably not from Washington and geographically helpful. Wouldn’t hurt to go into full pander mode and pick and woman and/or minority.
Michael Steele wouldn’t have all the requirements, but would be one possibility. Ditto Kay Bailey Hutchison. Or he might let the GOP have it with both barrels and pick Joe Lieberman.
Fooser, I’d be gloriously happy with Fred; however, McCain needs to add youth and vigor to the team and Jeri and the kids seem to drain with little Fred had left. (but not a bad way to lose it :)
Yeah, but what better way to close up the conservative doubt than to stick Fred Thompson in there, and be very popular in the south, along with the more moderate states elsewhere. Rudy would be a mistake, Huckabee too, Romney and him snipped at eachother too much for me to believe he’d pick him, so..
