McCain uses McCain-Feingold to his advantage
Quoting a Rush Limbaugh interview with Time,
“You know, Romney was up ten points in Florida until two things happened — until McCain started with this bulls–t about Romney being in favor of a time-line for withdrawal — he did that on a Saturday… It was a Saturday he made that claim. So it’s three days before the election. And Romney, because of McCain-Feingold, his groups could not go out and run ads countering what McCain had said.”
How quaint. For those who watched or read that exchange, I would be very surprised if that doesn’t cause Mitt to grind his teeth at night. This is also why I wouldn’t expect to see those delegates for Mitt released to McCain until there is absolutely no chance for a brokered convention. It seems to me that Mitt Romney realized if Huck won’t get out, his best chance for winning is to have a brokered convention and suspend his campaign. They could either split the vote until the end and McCain would walk away with the nomination, or he could graciously suspend his campaign for the good of the party and hope for a Brokered Convention to be back in the game.
Frankly, Huckabee’s camp could be pushing the same agenda. If you want Mitt to win, vote for Huckabee.
If in fact Mitt Romney releases his delegates and endorses McCain as some recent headlines indicate, I have to believe a deal was made to get a VP spot which could be a good choice for McCain. The other explanation would be that Romney is only thinking of his long term political career and as some critics say is a do anything and say anything to get ahead candidate.
This party solidarity for the sake of supporting the Iraq effort is nonsense. First, because Mike Huckabee also supports the Iraq effort, and second because the majority of Americans want the troops out of Iraq so to think that this one issue will be enough to win the election is nonsense. In order to win you need broad based conservative appeal. The moderate Iraq war supporter is an endangered species. In my opinion Mitt may in fact be losing any credibility he has left with the Republican Party.

Update - Recent headline suggests I will be wrong. What the heck Mitt. Couldn’t you wait until after March 5th to do this?
Haha! I just saw that.
Huck can’t stop McCain now.
