Browsing through the daily collection of websites I saw that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) signed a letter that demands the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney. All over the Internet there were cheers from the far left and the libertarian camps that another congressman has joined in the push to impeach the vice president. There’s a huge problem with celebrating this ‘victory’, though.
Using a man who put his hand on the Koran to give his oath of office isn’t going to help you win over many people to support impeachment.
Just an objective thought before celebrating this as an excellent move.
It always bothers me when every anti-Republican move is labeled as ‘far left.’ Keep in mind that is was the Republicans who brought impeachment charges against Clinton only about a decade ago and for far more partisan, insubstantial reasons. If only the ‘far left’ cheer a potential Cheyney impeachment, then what about the right?
I agree that the impeachment move is unlikely to succeed and that many Americans don’t think it will happen, but that’s partly due to media coverage. If a President has an affair – it’s all over the news and he has to testify. If a President leads us into a disastrous war and pushes unconstitutional policies, well… that’s just another day at the office. Call its supporters what you want – far left, if you will(insert ghost noises here) – but that fact that impeachment is completely off the table should be shameful to anyone who cares about the constitution. Our leaders need to be questioned and held accountable, even if the process doesn’t lead to an actual criminal sentence. Accountability is at the heart of democracy, but I guess that makes it some sort of ‘commie socialist’ value.
Last July a The American Research Group poll found that 54% of Americans favored impeaching Cheney and more favored the impeachment of Bush than didn’t by a margin of 46% to 40%.
I’m not great at math, but I am pretty sure that 54% result would mean all of the left PLUS 4% of the moderate right want the strong arm of justice to grab Cheney for his high crimes and misdemeanors and bring the whole truth to light in the process.
You may need to reassess your definition of ‘far left’ and maybe even leave that stale phrase to partisan hacks like Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter. if you don’t, you may begin to be looked at as out of touch with the true pulse of the nation.
will this ever happen?LOL of course not..
goverment is not for the people.has not been for along time.
Was it ever, Mark? Government will always be abused.
If that poll was truly believed, the Dmes would have acted. You actually start impeachment this lat in the game, it is clearly revenge and won’t go over well with the public.
No way the Democrats touch this; the blowback could cost them the White House and the chance to get a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. Political reality.
