Campus police in state universities within Arizona will soon get military style assault rifles, supposedly to better handle any threats that may arise.
The UT Austin police have had them for decades; the ‘67 tower shooting and the fact they had to raid a gun store to put an end to it was the source. I don’t think you’l find the UT Austin campus a ‘police state’; about as far from it as you can get, outside of California or the Ivy League..
It’s close enough Mike, based on one thing: students and everyone else are generally banned from having guns at these places, yet the police get military style assault rifles? The answer to campus violence is making them gun zones for all, not gun free zones, or cop assault rifle zones.
Of course, I’m for conceal carry on campus; my son would like be one of the first on UT Austin so equipped. However, this issue does not a ‘police state’ make; I’ve been in true police states, Fooser; have you? As such, I’m a lot more careful about slinging the term around.
No, it’s not a full blown police state, but the point is to distrust every possible step along the way to getting to one. I consider militarization of the police to be one of those steps. And the odds of large numbers of campuses changing their gun policies are slim.

I believe you wrote about a similar point too?

Police have to be able to protect; hard to do that if they are consistently outgunned by the bad guys.
I want every person to carry a gun on campus that will take the time to learn how to use it.
I don’t want any policeman using military rifles on a campus. Not only is that scary, it’s unneeded.
The city I live in just equipped the military with assault rifles. We have no murders and minimal crime. Why is this?
Constant militarization of the police. They’re getting meaner and more full of themselves.
