Not Shocking

Jeremiah Wright’s bloated rants against the U.S. are disgusting, false, and scandalous (not to mention really bad news for a certain Senator). But they are not shocking. I am not surprised or amazed at all by the “reverend’s” words. All he did was regurgitate decades of textbook modern leftism. His diatribes are not extreme; they are a serious political worldview which is held by the most honest and most ideologically consistent liberals.

After all, why do we need the socially extreme modern progressive model? The answer honest folks on the Left would give us would be that America, as a whole, has been a shameful and morally repugnant existence on the earth. These people look at America and can only see racism, oppression, imperialism, etc (most of which is the convenient creation of radical globalists). They hate America, but if what they believe about America is true, what other feeling can they have?

You’re not escaping the worldview behind Wright’s comments by voting for Hillary. She and her husband have consistently aligned themselves with people who say such things. This issue isn’t a black liberation theology issue, nor is it an Obama issue; it’s a liberal issue. This is what these people believe. Just to refresh your memory:

  • Ward Churchill, the ex-professor (!) who made headlines with his “America got what we deserved” 9/11 rhetoric. Churchill turned to be a comprehensive liar, but he certainly was not being novel with his ideas.
  • John Murtha, the US Congressman who became nearly orgasmic with delight at the prospect of “cold blooded” killings in Iraq by US troops. His accusations came before his briefing (forget the facts, let’s talk about what we want to be true), and the military eventually only charged one soldier with the unpremeditated murder.
  • Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard, who exemplified French intellectualism with such searing comments as,

I tend rather often to take the side of the conspiracy theory…. I’m not paranoid. It’s not paranoid because I think that they lie to us about an awful lot of things: Coluche, 9/11. You can see on the internet all the films of September 11 on the conspiracy theory. It’s fascinating, even addictive…

And then the winner:

… Did man ever walk on the moon ? I have seen a lot of documentaries on that and really, I wonder. In any case, I do not believe everything they tell me. That’s for sure.

Do these people even care about facts? Not likely. I don’t think Jeremiah Wright had much historical evidence in mind when he used his pulpit for hatriotism. Why should his colleagues do it any different?

  1. Liberals hate America? That sounds just like the “with us or against” rhetoric that’s thrown around today, which is sophomoric thinking at best. Besides, I believe several prominent conservative pastors said the same thing about 9/11: “America deserved it” because of its sinful ways.

Which view is more radical- that the tragedy of 9/11 was partly motivated by our aggression and mistakes abroad, or that God was angry at us for helping the gays?

Whatever you believe, quotes from a few nutballs are not indicative of an entire political philosophy. Or do you think Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson speak for all of conservative America?

  2. Not everyone who believes that slavery was a blot on our nation’s honor is a textbook 20th Century Liberal. We still live with the cultural aftermath of that blot. It’s worse now than it should be a century and half later because of how poorly we’ve handled it. Of course, there’s not much in the sociology literature about how to give a people their culture back. Africans were robbed of their own disparate cultures and force fed 250 years of slave culture. The solutions from both the Right & Left tended to involve magical thinking. The Right tended toward thinking of freedom as the only requiste component. “You’re free, Mr Black Man, go off now and be a productive, independent citizen”. The Left tended to want to re-create a paternalistic structure to conform to the contours of a black populace contorted by centuries of bondage. Surprise, both paths fail. Unlike the Right and the Left, I don’t indulge in magical thinking, so I’m uncertain about to heal those wounds. I supect you don’t undo that sort of cultural damage in a couple of decades, not unless you really know what you’re doing. The last two guys who seemed to know what they were doing on that front were Dr King & Malcolm X. They’re both dead.

  3. Are you still circulating this tired story? Unless you are fluent in Parisian French and have actually viewed the YEAR OLD French video yourself, you have no idea what Marion Cotillard said or didn’t say. I’m just amazed at how easily manipulated you are by some anti-French British tabloids. Did you realize that the us economy is sliding toward bankruptcy, that we are spending $14 billion a month in Iraq while in the midst of an economic meltdown, and that we’re trying to elect a new President? I would think you would surely find something else to talk about than what you THINK Mlle. Cotlard had to ruminate about while in the midst of a conversation about conspiracy theories. Let’s find a video of you a year ago in a conversation and see if we can find something which MIGHT embarrass you. Leave the girl alone; she’s already expressed regrets though she was not translated properly. You’re trying to destroy someone over her opinions AS YOU UNDERSTAND THEM TO BE. Shame; shame.

  4. Say what you want about 911 Truthers, the Illuminati, and Buzz Aldrin — but but the earh I live on is HOLLOW.

  5. Ron Paul said the 9/11 attacks were motivated by our presence in the middle east. DOes that make him a liberal?
Wright does not represent Obama’s views. They may agree in certain ways, but I don’t hold it agaisnt Obama that his pastor is a little angry about the plight of blacks in America. And while I wonder sometimes if the righteous anger is actually productive (maybe it’s a collective venting), I don’t think we should blame Obama for it. I don’t think it’s that crazy that inner city minorities would be angry about their lot in life!
