In the upcoming issue of The Nation, Jesse Jackson Sr. points out what is needed to bring progressive public policy change to society. Two great examples of those changes are FDR’s “New Deal” and LBJ’s “Great Society.”
In August 1996, I spoke at the Democratic National Convention, reminding delegates that progressive public policy change in America requires at least two key ingredients–an enlightened President and an energized electorate:
This election year we have both ingredients that Mr. Jackson pointed out: an enlightened President (assuming Obama gets election and not the unenlightened one, John McCain) and an energized electorate. Both are related. Barack Obama, a liberal progressive, has energized the electorate like no one since Robert F. Kennedy.
The New Deal brought us Social Security, the WPA and a good feeling in everybody’s heart. And The Great Society. Where do I start? Medicare for one. What a great program? Where would we be without it. College grants. Work-study.
Yes, Barack Obama is the “Great Liberal Hope” and we (liberals) can’t wait. Reading on Walden Bookstore.

“And the notion that somehow it’s cute or amusing, or a useful diversion, I think, is something that all of us have to recognize is just not the case. We all have First Amendment rights. And I am a constitutional lawyer and strongly believe in free speech, but as a culture, we really have to do some soul-searching to think about what kind of toxic information are we feeding our kids,”
i know!! it’s scary isn’t it?
The monstrous TVA, the bankrupt social security, expensive medicare, college is a liscensing program, WWII and Vietnam.
Perfect! let’s put these ideas into full swing!!
TVA was and is a great project. The Social Security System is not bankrupt. I’d advise you check your sources. College help for the underprivileged is great. Do you really only want the wealthy be able to afford to attend college. WW II. Well war is terrible, but this one was necessary. Vietnam. You got me there.
Good heavens, we really need a bloated government spending program like the WPA again, don’t we? So now we are going to add jobs to the rights mentioned in the Declaration of Independence. The right to a good high paying job. If you can’t get one because you don’t have the ambition or the drive or the education, well, we’ll create one for you and give it to you on a silver platter. And Social Security. Never mind providing for your own retirement. Never mind investing intelligently. Let someone else do it for you. You don’t take any risks. College grants. Yep, never mind working to pay your own way. Oh yes, do let’s all get together and vote for Mister all-dimples Obama, because hey, having an African American will give us all a really …how did you put it? a good feeling in everyone’s heart!
Interesting but I’m not convinced yet. I think government is the problem we’ve had all these years from both Republicans and Democrats.
Obama was absent from the Illinois Senate
on November 4, 1999. His name was on 2 bills
mentioned during that session.
Does anyone know where Obama was on November 4?
Elect Barack Obama for President.
The alternative is SCARY………
John McCain who voted 90% with Bush.
John McCain – Keating 5 scandal.
John McCain cut funds for Veterans.
John McCain is known in Washington for a temper.
John McCain poor choice in V.P. Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin under investigation for Trooper Gate.
Sarah Palin does not know what John McCain’s achievements are, she told Katie Couric, “I’ll have to get back to ya”.
We need strong, decisive leadership, a President who includes All Americans and will restore the faith of it’s people and make changes in Washington.
Barack Obama is the candidate for Change.
November 4, 2008, vote for Barack Obama.
