China’s Dalai Lama Dilemma - Propaganda Won’t Work

The Official Scapegoat of the OlympicsIn a recent announcement, China labeled the Dhali Llama a “wolf in monk’s wobes” and his followers “the scum of Buddhism,” the AP reports. I wish this was an April fools day joke, but it seems that China is really getting desperate in light of the international attention and the impending Olympics. And just in case those other remarks weren’t enough, China’s Minister of Public Security, Wu Heping, released a statement claiming that the Tibetans protesters were prepared to form “suicide squads” and that the the monks claimed “they fear neither bloodshed nor sacrifice.” To give more weigh to the allegations, he also detailed the weapons allegedly found in monasteries around Tibet’s capital, including 7,725 pounds of explosives and 19,000 sticks of dynamite.

Whether the people of China buy into the propaganda or not, the rest of the world probably won’t. The Dalai Lama is a respected religious leader, writer, and Nobel laureate. Framing him as some sort of Buddha-fascist terrorist ringleader isn’t exactly the most plausible smear campaign China could have mustered.

This situation is putting the hardliner Chinese government in a major dilemma: they need to crack down and stifle the dissent before the summer Olympics, but if they do, they’re going to further tarnish their international reputation. The world won’t turn a blind eye forever, especially considering the Dalai Lama’s popularity. The U.S., for one, has been cautious about the situation, but it seems that even they’re entering the fray:

In response to the recent statements by China, the Bush administration defended the Dhali Llama, calling him a “man of peace.” U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said, “there is absolutely no indication that he wants to do anything other than have a dialog with China on how to discuss the serious issues there.” The statements are a welcome move from the administration, but will they follow through with anything more?

Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested President Bush should boycott the opening ceremony of the Olympics, though the President has so far said he won’t. China didn’t ignore Pelosi’s comments, though. They responded by saying Pelosi is “ignoring” the truth about Tibet. Do we really have to put up with this?

Comon, Mr. President - Germany’s Prime Minister Angela Merkel already said she won’t attend the Olympic games. You’ve only got so many months left in office. Do something bold. Make a statement. In 2004, you said, “I believe that freedom is the deepest need of every human soul.” Those words ring true, even if they don’t always mesh with the policies you’ve put forth. Now’s your chance to take a step in another direction, to stand up and show you mean it. Show the world that the U.S. really does care about the freedom of other nations, even if it means taking some risks to stand for our principles.

  1. China, China, China. Oh bother. Such a pity to see outside agitators disturb the famed Chinese serenity in these great and glorious recent decades of Harmony and growth. At a time when the happy Panda is opening its gates of joyous hospitality to athletes and auto makers from around the eccentric World, we find the greedy and selfish Taiwanese so noisily refusing to accept their Fate; and in the mountain provinces, cultish Buddhists and even savage Muslims, some of them with weapons, unwilling to accept a peaceful Fate; and in the cities, misguided Christians who refuse to accept their magical religion’s Fate; and in the People’s universities, spoiled graduate students who refuse to embrace the Fate prepared for them; and in the numberless prisons, so many otherwise honorable and beloved Chinese who await a Fate they refuse to accept! How their ancestors must cry out!

Is this not unfortunate, that the longsuffering junta in Beijing that rules with benign care and ever-increasing precision over all the cities and villages and businesses profitable and not so profitable—is it not unfortunate that such a caring and longsuffering Father Government should be embarrassed by disharmony in its house even as the guests are arriving? But do not be of sorrow, for wise old China has seen many things and yet always has endured. Your family Bush understands a great Fate, and is always welcome in the People’s house.

  2. you buy into propaganda everyday dumb dumb. after all it was propaganda that lied you into a war with iraq. the propaganda is working yet again. the west has played up the dalai lama and tibet story for YEARS and YEARS. the psychopaths in the CIA actually funded the bastard and trained his people. yes the same CIA that created and trained AL QUEDA, the same CIA that goes around killing democratically elected leaders and installing brutal dictators. are you advocated for a theocracy that keeps the majority of the tibetans in slave status? sigh, dumb fucks indeed.

  3. Wow, you impersonate an idiot even better than hughvictor does. An inspired parody, american sheep.

Now, what did you think about Ryan’s suggestion that the propaganda veil is no longer sufficient to cover Chinese crimes?

  4. Each one of us is unique in Gods eyes and has a unique relationship with the truth. This controversy regarding the argument of the chinese government with Tibet and the dalai
lama will tell us all where we stand regarding our responsibility to our own spiritual welfare. China is acting out its own perception of what is appropriate and correct to do regarding
Tibet. The dalai lama is acting correctly in not fighting with China but in acting diplomatically and logically toward China who has their own free agency to act as pleases them. If their actions are
unreasonable, they will suffer the consequenses, as is the case for anyone of us who acts unreasonably. —Doug Rosbury
