Atheism-Theism and Society Debate

Brian LePort has arranged for two of his friends to begin a “debate” next week on atheism, theism, and their respective roles in society and government. If everything goes well, the questions and arguments will be posted here next week and should stir some interesting debate.

  1. That is quite possibly pathetically stupid. Nothing personal, but atheism is the absence of belief in God. So it can’t really have a place in anything.

In addition theism is extremely generic. At its simplest it boils down to deism- it is religion, not theism that should be mentioned. Deists are wrong, but they are minimally wrong.

Also, I find it hard to see how anyone could want religion involved in government. That would be a theocracy- or at the least a government church, which as we have seen isn’t good.

As for society… well, that is completely irrelevant. Theism and atheism are about reality- they are truth and fact statements (well… strong atheism at least). Given that they don’t fall under functionalism- they fall under science.

  2. Samuel,

I think you should give the debate a chance. Especially because we are asking the two participants to explain how the worldview that they represent plays out pragmatically in society and politics. As much as you may like to limit Atheism-Theism to the sidelines in these areas of life, that simply is not reality.
