The latest Gallup poll has Obama up 6 points, 48 percent to McCain’s 42. If you notice, that’s only 90% of the vote–10 percent are either undecided or cannot stand either candidate enough to vote. I, for one, refuse to partake in the government’s two party scheme that doesn’t allow dissent or change (despite both sides talking a good talk).
So, is Obama on the up and up? I can’t see him getting more than 45-48% of the national vote. The real question is can McCain get 45-48%? It’s going to be 1992 all over again, neither “major” candidate getting a majority of the votes cast, I suspect.

Well, a reasonable person would have expected some degree of consolidation once reality began to sink in for the Clinton supporters. I imagine quite a number of them, once the field of view changed from the primary contest to the reality of the rather stark choice presented by the fall campagn, spent a bit of time chewing on their promise to vote for McCain if Clinton lost the nomination, then spit it out.
Any person who could support Clinton in the primary, then vote for McCain in November can’t be very serious about supporting Clinton’s politics. Only two explanations make sense from here. First is race. I recently discovered by carefully reading Clinton campaign literature and listening to soundbites, that Obama is a black guy. That may be a problem for him come November among some voting blocs. The other possibility is that those people were voting on the basis of a personality cult, not politics. The Nation would be better served if those people avoided voting altogether.

I couldn’t agree more. However, I think that happening- and Obama taking the resulting 2 to 1 beating when he has to stand on his extremely thin and very liberal record- isn’t going to happen.
This was a classic identity politics contest with an incredible level of cult-like characteristics. The Obamatrons were by far ther worst; they can’t quote anything he’s ever done, and applaud obvious gaffes and glaring ignorance on issues. Obama’s campaign is the most cultish one I’ve ever seen get this far.
