Proof Positive? Homosexuality is Biological, Not Political

Gay marriage – it’s back in the spotlight and bigger than ever now that California has legalized it.  Shortly after the law was passed, happy couples across the state started tying the not in what was seen by many as a watershed moment for similar movements across the country.  Even a few celebrities took advantage, like Star Trek’s George Takei (Sulu) who married his long time partner Brad Altman.

The really interesting developments came later, though, when I read this article on MSNBC: “Gay men, straight women have similar brains.  New study points to possible biological source of sexual orientation.”  Here’s an excert:

Gay men and straight women share some characteristics in the area of the brain responsible for emotion, mood and anxiety, researchers said on Monday in a study highlighting the potential biological underpinning of sexuality.

Brain scans also showed the same symmetry among lesbians and straight men, the researchers wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cool stuff.  This should throw a wrench in the works for opponents of gay marriage, including those lobbying to repeal California’s law with a constitutional amendment.  After all, part of their argument is based on the idea that homosexuality is unnatural – a matter of personal choice.  If that proves not to be the case, then gay and lesbian community might have more success with future campaigns.
