StrangeMaps has information on the Federal Government’s huge masses of land owned in mostly Western states.
This map details the percentage of state territory owned by the federal government. The top 10 list of states with the highest percentage of federally owned land looks like this:
- Nevada 84.5%
- Alaska 69.1%
- Utah 57.4%
- Oregon 53.1%
- Idaho 50.2%
- Arizona 48.1%
- California 45.3%
- Wyoming 42.3%
- New Mexico 41.8%
- Colorado 36.6%

New York has a tiny amount .. surprising
the percentage is often inversely proportional to the value of the land. Still, nice to see the nation has some assets; when we go into full national forclosure when the Baby Boomer’s Social Security/Medicare bills bankrupt the nation, we’ll need the assets to sell off to prevent being kicked out of the rest of the country.
Not sure if the Chinese or the Sauds will end up winning the bidding for the Western U.S., but I’d bet on the Chinese. My son’s fluent; he’ll be OK.
