There’s no reason for the true capitalists to oppose nationalizing the industry at this point. The oil and gas industries are already regulated to a “T”, there isn’t much more for government to do other than flat out nationalization.
Is socialism the answer to fascism? No. They’re both collectivist and “socialist” in nature.
Those of us who believe in the free market should not fret. This is the natural course of government. As government intervenes into the economy, it causes problems. These problems “must be fixed by government”, so to speak, so government must intervene again to fix the original problems that it created. These interventions will create another set of new problems, so on and so forth, until eventually the government will control the entire economy and we will live under socialism.
The main reason we have arrived at this is because Republicans and conservatives, while professing to be free market, are only halfway free market in their beliefs. This erodes faith in capitalism as we see fascist policies emerge under the name of free market capitalism. The oil industry has not been free market since the early 1900s.
Go ahead and let them nationalize it. It is the inevitable course of things at this point. Our prices will skyrocket, gas will be rationed, and capital will be wasted. Hopefully we can hurry and hit rock bottom since people refuse to believe in capitalism and won’t reverse the trend. At that point, the choice to our civilization will become clearer: private property in the means of production or socialism. There are only two ways. We cannot have interventionism into the market permanently.

It would be the first time the U.S. Government directly nationalized a product ‘manufacturer’, as supposed to a ’service’. And a bulk product at that, where manufacturing efficiencies require careful balance to keep costs down. The government has no clue on how that’s done, since they have no clue about efficiency in any area. The way they’ll get out of it is by masking costs through tax money thievery and regulating the competition completely out of existence.
Just a minor point, but I have a feeling that prices are going to skyrocket whatever happens. As long as population and industry keep expanding, demand for oil will continue to rise. Plus, it doesn’t seem like the oil reserves are going to last forever either.
The free market is just too horrible. I have converted to neo-leninism.

When oil was $10 a barrel you didn’t have speculators going long and if we didn’t drive cars, the price would be nowhere near current levels.
Nationalization of Natural Resources in North America, (OIL)
It is now time for the current US Congress to draft a law that will authorize the use of the Armed Forces of America to seize control of all Oil reserves, assets, and property within the borders of the United States of America. Americans are suffering financially because of the profiteering that is being sanctioned by the current Congress. The very survival of America will depend on the controls and relief to the consumer. By controlling the oil and refining process, the final price to the consumer can drop back to levels in the two digit margin, i.e. 39 cents. It is now a matter of National Security that this happen within a very short period of time, or every American will suffer the financial burden of out of control price per gallon for fuel, thus driving up every consumer product and service beyond the affordable means of an average income American.
The American Republic will recommend that the current US Congress and President be held accountable for this “crime against Humanity” as well as numerous others.
It is time to fire the US Congress and President, now and in November, 2008. A new Republic for North America is underway.
We are a Legion of many, who will live a life of peace, and have respect for all living things, while having considerations for those who are different, and look for ways to truly accommodate those who are slow in understanding.
We support the poor, helpless, and defenseless people. We support the freedom of Women, we support the sane treatment of animals and the environment, we support the freedom of religion and expression. We do not support ignorance, period.
