The United States’s determination to build an unneeded missile shield in Eastern Europe is showing a repeat of the diplomatic mistakes made in the late 1930s by Great Britain. Russia sees these missile shields as a threat and they are determined to do something about it–even taking military action, the London Times reports. Sure, the populace in the US does not see Russia as a great evil that we must destroy, so to us their reaction over the missile shield seems unfounded.
But what about the Russian government’s view? They see this as a threat.
The United States has done an excellent job at maneuvering foreign policy (we lose some, we win most) to prevent a third world war from breaking out. If the determination to keep the missile shield in Eastern Europe holds, though, the beginning of a World War III might be around the corner (especially if it is coupled with an airstrike on Iran).
Russia holds all the cards and it will be the United States that will have to back down to prevent a big war this time.
