Weatherman prosecutor says Obama-Ayers link is BS

NY Times in today’s paper runs a letter to the editor about the story from William Ibershof, the lead prosecutor of the Weatherman.

“As the lead federal prosecutor of the Weathermen in the 1970s (I was then chief of the criminal division in the Eastern District of Michigan and took over the Weathermen prosecution in 1972), I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child.

Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen.

Because Senator Obama recently served on a board of a charitable organization with Mr. Ayers cannot possibly link the senator to acts perpetrated by Mr. Ayers so many years ago.”

  1. Of course not, but it does link Obama to people who DID commit those acts. Why would any person who loved his country ever willingly associate with its enemies?

It’s a matter of character, sir. While Ayers has reformed his methods, he has not sufficiently repented and renounced his previous behavior nor his hatred for America.

Do we want a President who would associate with such a person? I know I wouldn’t.

  2. McCain’s father-in-law was a mafia member linked to the ACTUAL MURDER of Don Bolles.
McCain has never repudiated that murder.
McCain went on the payroll of a mafia controlled organization for two years.
He was a family member of the mafiosi for 17 years.
Even now he still benefits from the blood money left to his mafia princess wife.

Ayers blew up a statue. You are willing to overlook murder for vandalism?

Do you want a president who will allow - or be blackmailed into - letting the mafia run the administration?

  3. So, dig into those assertions about McCain’s character and publish them. He’s not above scrutiny either.

  4. Read them. They are right here in this blog. With links to CREDIBLE reporting.

  5. Jonolan, why do you assume Bill Ayers hates his country? Could it be that he loves his country so much that he was willing to risk death and imprisonment to stop the actions of his country that he believed went against the principles that this nation was founded upon.. namely Life, Liberty and Freedom. Enlisting people to go kill others and be killed in a country that posed absolutely ZERO threat to our security shows absolutely no concern for the aforementioned principals.

Our revolutionary hero’s were certainly traitors to England and anti-patriotic. However, we hold their violent resistance with great regard today.

  6. DaveNate,

You should read more on the actions and motives of the Weatherman. They hated - and I assume still hate - America. They also undertook a campaign of terror.

  7. I would like to know exactly who they were terrorizing because the targets were almost always structures of significance and oftentimes warning letters were sent out in advance to minimize human casualties.

    Were the buildings being terrorized?

  8. The fact that people actually call this a terrorist organization speaks volumes to me about their understanding of real terror that happens in the world today with suicide bombers, targeted religious violence and beheadings, none of which we have to deal with on a day to day basis.

Get over yourself with these Weather Underground claims. You are like a woman standing on a sidewalk complaining about a chipped nail while a homeless beggar coughs up blood on the sidewalk.

  9. DaveNate: you might try that argument with the surviving family members of the policeman shot in the back by the Weatherman; they might have something to say.

No one I know is linking Obama to the terrorist activities they practiced. The linkage is to the radical concepts they hold in terms of indoctrination (’education’, it ain’t). As one of those who grew up in the 60s, I have many friends who protested; but I’d be a bit picky about associating with ones who set off bombs at our government facilities. But that’s just because I figure my friends and associations might reflect on me; I’m not ‘the One’ who is apparently immune from such.

  10. Sara Palin is linking Obama to the terrorist activities saying he “pals around with terrorists”. Pals around in the present tense and terrorists in the plural.

I was not aware of anyone from the weather underground shooting a policeman. I was aware of one bombing that took a life that they suspected was weather underground but was never claimed credit for or proven to be them. Unless it’s Bill Ayers though, it is an even more dubious claim than it already is.

If you had friends who set off bombs at government facilities taking down statues and such would you feel terrorized? I feel like Greenpeace could be considered more of a terrorist organization in some respects.

  11. “You should read more on the actions and motives of the Weatherman. They hated - and I assume still hate - America. ”

From personal experience, I know this is not true at all. They did not hate America, but they did hate what Lyndon Johnson was doing to the country.

I talked with a number of them, including Ayers wife, back in those days. They were, for the most part, idealistic young patriots who were willing to risk their own lives to get the country back on the right track and stop the war to recolonize Vietnam.

  12. Your views of America are perfectly explained then.

  13. Yep, “idealistic young patriots”
