Keith Olbermann Doesn’t Get It

In regards to This isn’t about yelling… Keith Olberman missed the point big time.  Maybe he should have asked some people to come on his show and explain why they voted for Prop 8 rather than come up with his own reasons which are dead wrong.

The whole point of this issue for those who are against allowing gays to marry is that the government is overstepping it’s boundaries in marriage because they feel it is a religious institution.  The government over time has latched itself onto marriage(in many societies) for the purposes of property rights, and administering disputes over the lives of children.  The government can and does get involved in these exact same matters for people who are not married so marriage is not a requirement for the state to get involved.  This is not about equality, this is not about health insurance, this is not about immigration laws, this is not about a homophobic society afraid all kids are going to end up gay, this is not about prejudice, this is not about an expression of love, this is about respecting religion.  In the same way that Muslims were outraged over a cartoon of Muhammad, religious people in America are outraged over the prospect of gay marriage.

I and many others will concede that Gays should be able to have all the same civil rights as heterosexuals and by the government involving itself in marriage for the reasons previously described there are some civil rights that come with marriage.  If Gays want the benefits that come with marriage they would be wise to fight for civil unions being equal to marriage because it will be much more easy to accomplish and will provide the exact same benefits, minus the word “marriage”.  Religious people against gay marriage should step up the plate with some of their hypocrisy and recognize that marriage today has an awful lot of secularity in it and they should be fighting to get the state out of marriage for those who clearly are not religious.

In summary, the marriage process is backwards.  Today, the state marries people with a license and the Church blesses this agreement.  The way it should occur for religious people is that the Church would first marry people and then the state would recognize it.  The state on the other hand, would be free to perform as many civil unions as society dictates whether the people are gay, lesbian, heterosexual, first cousins (with or without gene screening), or even multiple spouses or where one or both parties is a minor.

As for the verse you wanted Keith “Lev 18:22 - You must not have sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman; it is a detestable act.”

  1. You’re begging the question of marriage being a religious institution. I don’t see that you’ve made that argument.

  2. thanks for this post. the keith uberlame commentary on gay marriage is a perfect example of the emotional argument the media loves to examine and spread around. the ignorance of the real issues involved in the marriage discussion is sort of amazing.

this isn’t about love. since when has government cared about sexual attraction?

so thank you for this post. but i don’t think marriage is necessarily a religious rite. i think its important to government because it ensures the healthy and safe ordering of society.

i actually don’t really see why civil unions should be granted some of the benefits that marriage has. hospital visits, inheritance stuff, maybe SS….but the government privileges marriage because it is completely capable of taking care of itself and producing more children (if it wants to or can).

marriage has never been equal. that is the point. so that people are encouraged to join in unions which provide for the safety of children and the benefit of society.

if we want civil unions to have the same benefits, that’s okay, but there really isn’t a reason, except two peope are living together. and committed to each other.
