Nikki Haley has done more to improve gender and racial political diversity in South Carolina than has the entire Democratic Party in the last several decades.

I’m not registered to any political party, but that hasn’t kept me from telling Republicans and Democrats what to do. I’m particularly voluntary towards Democrats, primarily because they apparently have no clue on what’s right and what’s stupid. Still, I’ve offered my sterling advice to the GOP as well. I advocated for Sarah Palin to [...]

Barack Obama is in precisely the same situation as Harry Truman nearly 60 years ago. No matter what ones opinion is of whose idea for prosecuting the war is correct and without regard for political philosophies and party affiliations, the President of the United States cannot – should not – be challenged in public by his military leaders.

South Carolina voters get a chance to refine some of their primary decisions today as party nominations for a number of political offices will be finalized in runoffs. It’s the final exhalation before a four-month long run to the general election. As the playoffs work towards the championship, the state – the NATION – has to wonder: Can South Carolina politics get any more strange?

Unlike some candidates, Nikki Haley doesn’t wear her religion on her sleeve, shoving it in the faces of voters and using it as a campaign tool.

Isn’t it interesting that the South Carolina Republican Party can nominate (or nearly so) two minority candidates, one for governor and one for Congress (Tim Scott(e), 1st District) without the least bit of angst?

J. W. Ragley, Dr. Mick Zais’ spokesperson/campaign manager/attack dog has made it his mission to smear one of Zais’ opponents, Dutch Fork High School teacher Kelly Payne. Attacks are something one might expect in a political campaign, but Zais/Ragley have gotten a bit creepy in their … ummmm …pursuits of Ms. Payne.

Clearly, there are semantical differences on whether or not the Border Tax Equity Act of 2009 was imposing a value added tax or, rather, opened the door for one. What remains of this story, however, is that Barrett changed his voice and his vote to suit his political ambitions.

In a letter to South Carolina’s Senate and House budget leaders, Governor Mark Sanford stated his opposition to the FY 2010-11 Appropriations Act.
Sanford criticizes the legislature for initiating fees that are “backdoor tax increases” saying that “raising taxes to cover budget shortfalls is not good policy.”

In keeping with its love affair with secrecy, the South Carolina State Senate tabled a budget proviso that would have required public colleges and universities to post their spending online.

Nikki Haley’s Republican competitors for the office of governor seem – to me – much like those cars and cabins on the side of the road; lost under the stifling growth of kudzu and irreparably damaged by a lack of sunlight.

Much like Bill Clinton, when there’s trouble, Obama reaches out to those over whom he has the most influence. Whenever Clinton was having a hard time he headed straight to the nearest black church. They swooned, hollered “AMEN!” and, like Monica Lewinsky, put a smile on his face.

For a state that’s supposed to be (in)famous for its bare knuckles style of politics, for some reason there can’t be a real debate between candidates in South Carolina. The latest gawd-awful bastardization of the medium was held Friday night in Spartanburg featuring the four Republicans seeking the South Carolina governor’s office.
