Ignorant of History

Ignorant people protesting the Olympics being held in China because of China’s oppression of Tibet. The British also invaded Tibet many years ago, but no one is protesting the 2012 Olympics while they’re at it. London is getting the Olympics that year.

So, apparently we would never have allowed Nazi Germany to host the Olympics. The year 1936 must not have taken place.

  1. Yes, but the US at least made a stink over Berlin’s policies and considered boycotting. I don’t think we should punish the athletes because oh china’s human right’s infringements, but the this time around US state department is practically friendly with China’s. The hippies are a little extreme, but it would be nice if the US toyed with actually boycotting the games, or if it toyed with pressuring China to change its policies. Trouble is, China has us by the balls, financially. We can’t take a stand because we don’t have the cash.

  2. Doesn’t anyone get satire anymore?

I’m all over the map on this one.

Olympic participation can rightfully be linked to a consideration of the host country’s human rights record.

Tibet is a part of China. To fight for Tibet is start the great war again – for the “rights of small nationalities.” We can have an interest in preserving cultural Tibet, but not political Tibet. It is as gone as the kingdom of Dalmatia.

  3. I believe every political group down to a town has the right to secede. Tibet should be allowed to.

  4. Why, Lance; is the Paulville concept your idea?

Actually there might be a better place available now that the 400+ kids will not be returning anytime soon (the 350 lawyers will do a great job on making this whole process so smooth for all involved; yeah, right.).

  5. I’m with you in principle, Lance, but realpolitik has to win this one. Tibet is way to strategic to give up. High ground, forward base, source of major rivers…
it would be like if Canada was independent.

  6. Meh.
Well… we could host the olympics in china, but make a major point of insisting it be in the “Tibettan claimed zone” then invite the dalai llama to open the ceremony.

I’m more worried about the UK olympics…letting a load of immigrants into my country who can run, jump and swim… we’ll never bloody catch them ;)
